Airbrush vs Traditional Make-up

My hope is that this podcast episode and corresponding blog post will leave you more educated on traditional vs airbrush makeup when you leave. 9 out of 10 brides ask which option is best and that's exactly why Dani and I go in-depth into this topic of traditional liquid makeup or airbrush. As it turns out, there's another type of makeup to be introduced during this episode, aerosol foundation makeup. Luckily Dani takes the time to fully explain the differences and the pros and cons to all, including why your skin type makes all the difference. You can expect to walk away from this episode with the timing differences, the sustainability differences how to prep for both and the cost differences.

Dani has been doing makeup and hair for 19 years and over the years, Dani has used both traditional and airbrush makeup. According to her, one of the main differences between airbrush makeup and traditional makeup is the basic application of it and the tools. Airbrush makeup is by using a gun, it is going to spray the makeup on you, whereas, traditional makeup means the application of makeup with brushes, sponges, or via hand. Airbrush makeup is typical of 2 types, silicon and water-based when you look at the ingredients. Your artist will decide which type of makeup will suit you according to your skin type.

Primers have come a long way with traditional makeup, they help give longevity to makeup. Before primers, airbrush makeup was more long-lasting but now with the advancement in the primers, both traditional makeup and airbrush makeup are neck to neck. Primers are very lightweight, so it gives a nice flawless base to start makeup with.

There's also a 3rd option which is aerosol makeup, which uses a canister with a pump and a spray. Dani says it is more efficient when it comes to the application than airbrush makeup. Each canister has a separate foundation color in it and gives a nice flawless look. If the artist listens to what the client is saying carefully, they will know what kind of application, light or heavy, the client wants. Also, makeup application depends on the weather and location.

Dani believes good skin makes good makeup. She says that if I prepare your skin perfectly, your makeup application will still look like skin and not feel heavy. Dani sends her clients her tips about when to get facials, or other treatments prior to makeup to make sure they are prepped to perfection. While talking about trial looks prior to the final look, Dani says she books trial looks and is open to looking at picture inspirations from the clients. Dani advises to take rest, stay hydrated, apply sunscreen, not do anything new prior to your big event and try to stay consistent with treatments.

Traditional makeup is going to cost you less and airbrush makeup costs you more when it comes to price. Also, Dani thinks airbrush makeup is a little wasteful. Dani went to cosmetology school and learned a lot about skin there. She has learned to ask the right kind of questions about skin allergies, diets, and lifestyle. She says this kind of experience comes with time and practice.

When it comes to the timing of the application of makeup, it's all about the blending, and Dani takes time with both kinds of makeup so there are no harsh lines. Makeup is all about asking the right questions about what the client wants or is looking for to give them a more personalized and wholesome experience.
